St. John

St. John, US Virgin Islands offers a unique and laid-back lifestyle that attracts many people that want to escape from the “rat race” of life. Our island is truly the best of both worlds. You get the tropical paradise experience of living on a lush island with incredible beaches, but you’re just a quick ferry ride away from the services and amenities of St. Thomas. St. John and St. Thomas are both U.S. territories, making transport between the two islands simple and hassle free. This is especially valuable to those buying property on St. John, since they don’t have to deal with international laws and immigration restrictions.

Our glorious, pristine beaches get all of the attention, but there is so much more to do on St. John. How about snorkeling and paddleboarding with sea turtles? Maho Bay is the best place for this. These gentle, elegant creatures are friendly and will come right up next to swimmers, and they are easy to see in the crystal-clear water. Many guests tell us that their Maho Bay sea turtle encounter was the highlight of their visit.

Hiking is also a big draw here on St. John. Since 70 percent of the island is a National Park, hiking trails are well marked and maintained, and they are an essential part of a great St. John vacation. One of our favorite hikes is the Lind Point Trail, and it’s a great warmup for the more serious St. John island hikes. Starting at Cruz Bay harbor, this easy takes you to Lind Point Battery Overlook, where you can enjoy stunning views of Cruz Bay. The trail meanders through trees, and extensions go down from the trail to Honeymoon Bay Beach and Salomon Bay Beach.

Hikers won’t want to miss the Virgin Island National Park’s most popular pathway, the Reef Bay Trail. The trail head starts on Centerline Road and takes you down to the Bay. This trail is beloved by hikers because you can see ruins, deer and a 40-foot waterfalls. At the base of the waterfall, don’t miss the centuries-old petroglyphs that were by the island’s original inhabitants, the Taino Indians! Make sure to bring a swimsuit and a towel for both of these trails, since you’ll definitely want to stop for a swim on the beach or a plunge in the waterfall.

The Danish ruins are another exciting feature of St. John. The Danish first inhabited the island in 1718 when The Danish West India and Guinea Company was established on St. John. there. The island was a major producer of sugar, primarily at The Cinnamon Bay Estate, where you can still see the giant boiling room chimney. Deep in the jungle of the Virgin Islands National Park, you can see many more ruins, like the Josie Gut Sugar Estate. The Annaberg Sugar Plantation, establed in 1718, is one of the most famous and complete ruins. Situated atop a hill overlooking the bay, it’s an amazing spot with views for days.
